Children look to the sky in astronomy event at Oakworth holiday club

Dozens of children learned how to unravel and appreciate some of the mysteries of the night skies during a fun-filled three-day holiday club.
About 80 youngsters, aged five to 11, enjoyed activities at Christ Church, in Oakworth, Keighley. These were put on by the church and by Keighley Astronomical Society, which lent its expertise to the venture. ‘Space Academy’ Holiday club leader, the Reverend John Rogers, said: “It was brilliant. This is the first time we’ve had the Astronomical Society on board and it was the best club we’ve had so far. We made air rockets, planispheres – which show what stars can be seen at different times of year – and water rockets which we let off in the church grounds. There was also biscuit-making, lots of art work and games. We couldn’t have done it without the help of our team of volunteers.” The club was rounded off with a barbecue, where parents and carers could see what the children had been getting up to during the previous three days.
